Sport is skill acquisition

Skills-oriented study – education beyond a specific subject area

A degree programme that focuses on the humanistic ideal of education imparts a wide range of skills. Some of these skills originate from the respective subject cultures, as they are considered essential for mastering future challenges. In addition, there are numerous other skills that are fundamental to self-development and human coexistence. These include, in particular, self-perception and perception of others, experiencing self-efficacy and learning through practice, practical engagement with didactic principles and recognising limits.

All of this can be learned and practised wonderfully and almost ‘incidentally’ through sporting activities. University sports offer these opportunities in a university context and are therefore an important part of university life and enshrined in higher education law.

In addition, sport conveys values such as fairness and the meaningfulness of rules and teaches principles of performance. International students in particular are given the opportunity to connect and exchange ideas and gain insight into culture-specific contexts. University sports also support the process of academic success by helping students acquire health-related resources.

As an integral part of student life, university sports are also an important factor in the city's appeal as a place to live, offering active leisure activities and representing the university beyond the borders of Greifswald. By involving staff, it also greatly promotes a positive social climate within the university.

As the largest provider of sporting activities in Greifswald, it also has an impact on the entire city of Greifswald, not least through its offers for external participants. Here, Greifswald residents have the opportunity to experience a slice of university life from the inside and get in touch with its members.

The main objectives of university sports remain the development, safeguarding and provision of a diverse range of high-quality sports, health and exercise programmes tailored to the individual needs of students and staff.

To achieve these objectives continuously, well-equipped facilities and sufficient resources are required

The University Sports Facility

University Sports is a department of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and is responsible for designing and organising sports activities for all students and employees of the University of Greifswald. University Sports is a task enshrined in the State Higher Education Act and is therefore part of the educational mandate of universities. It organises sports and exercise programmes in over 80 sports and competition formats throughout the year for the approximately 10,250 students and 6,300 employees of the University of Greifswald (including University Medicine). Every year, around 800 courses of varying lengths take place each semester during the lecture period and the lecture-free period.

In line with our mission, our goal is to motivate as many people as possible from our target group to participate in active sports and to create the optimal conditions for this. To this end, we strive to create a cost-effective, needs-oriented, diverse and high-quality range of sports and exercise activities for the students and employees of the University of Greifswald, offering variety and balance to everyday study and work life at the university.
